Jan. 20 - Installation Day 8

We finished the floor installation!!! Total 10 sets of 8 colors plus 6 more lines = 86 lines x 2 inches = 172 inches x 14 ft. (168 inches) = 28896 inches square = 2408 ft. square. Once again, Yukari, Heesoo, Joi, Woo, Soon, and Grey came out to help, and one of the last lines, Lloyd also joined us sprinkling the shredded flowers.

Yukari documented the installation process in photos and videos, and I'll share them after the opening reception. Thank you, Yukari. =)

Thursday was a day of rest -

Friday, we hung a light box which looks fantastic. There, we're done. We just have a huge vinyl of my name and the show title to attach and some labeling. That's it.

I also went to Scott Ingram's ... Through Line... at Solomon Projects. His framed drawings were spread all over the gallery from the entrance... his interest in architecture reflected in his drawings as well as his placement of the framed drawings. I could not stand straight for long, so came home early for more rest. - just to let you know, I have a herniated disc and sciatica, so if you see me limping, sitting down, or not standing up straight... that's why .

And next door of Get This! Gallery, Saltworks gallery also has an opening tomorrow 6-9PM for Jiha Moon's Blue Peony and Impure Thoughts. You can read a preview interview she did with burnaway here - Preview: Jiha Moon’s new solo opens Saturday at Saltworks.

It would be interesting to see how the audience responses to the simultaneous openings of two Korean women artists... also excited to have a wider range of audience from non-art communities, like my mom's friends from a church, and see how they respond to the visual inspirations of Korean artists' narratives.

Please, be mindful that the installation is extremely fragile.

See you tomorrow!

Jan. 19th - Installation Day 7

I have some catching up to do with this blogging about the r e p o s e installation!

Jan. 16th - Installation Day 4

Floor installation started with Woo, Soon, Grey, Yukari, and Yi-Shin. It took us awhile to learn how to make straight lines... each line took approximately 30 minutes.

We went to the lecture at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center early of the day, heard from the chief curator of New Museum, Richard Flood. From 1994-2005, he was Chief Curator at the Walker Art Center. Flood previously served as the Director of Barbara Gladstone Gallery, Curator at P.S.1, and Managing Editor of Artforum magazine.
Wow, I just linked like... 5 major art institutions he's been involved with. What a career he has had... and that obviously drew a large crowd at the Contemporary Art Center. Great, rather humorous, stories about his career... as my friend retorted, "everything came so easy for him, it seems." He just knew right people in a right place and a right time. Is it... true... that many time even with art, one needs such a thing called luck? It's crazy to think that the chief curator of New Museum almost almost... saw my beginning of installation (there wasn't much to see) while he was visiting the gallery Saltworks next door. He commented that in a thread of the artists whom he worked with... he finds this commonality with their work... a potential in such work that allows to see an endless possibilities to the future ... something like that. It just sounded great, and his New Yorker style of talking was just flattering. Got to see some of my professors and friends... gave them hugs and postcards.

Jan. 17th - Installation Day 5

Floor installation continued with Grey, Yukari, and Tina.

Jan. 18th - Installation Day 6 (MLK Day)

Happy MLK Day! Floor installation continued with Woo, Soon, Grey, Yukari, Heesoo, Joi, and Lois. We started to get faster putting the lines. Accomplished 21 lines, took us about 6 and half hours. Had 2 large pizzas (mushroom and green pepper) for dinner.

Jan. 19th - Installation Day 7

Floor installation continued with Woo, Soon, Yukari, Jamie, Heesoo, Joi, Lois, and James. We are becoming true experts of putting lines. Accomplished 28 lines, took us about 6 and half hours. Floor is close being done. Had Five Guys burgers for dinner.
Lloyd hung a panel and a print, and the show is starting to look more complete.

Jiha Moon stopped by the gallery and had a wonderful conversation. My parents were happy to talk to another Korean artist. Jiha Moon's "Blue Peony and Impure Thoughts" opening reception will be on the same night this Saturday at Saltworks Gallery next door.

Can't wait until Saturday!

Resting home today, to be resumed tomorrow!

Great Postcards + before flowers left the studio

Thanks to Lloyd - Get This! Gallery.
The postcard for the show looks awesome!
When you get a chance to grab one of these, please do!
It would look great on your refrigerator or on a desk.
Friends, whenever I get a chance, I'll hand these... out... to YOU!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my mother and father, who have been my hands and feet throughout the process of this show preparation. I am struggling with my back pains, and all this wouldn't have been possible without their help as well as my friends.

As a part of show, you will be able to view a video documentation of the flower cutting process as well. I find it quite beautiful, humorous, and nostalgic. A Korean singer Patty Kim (my parents' favorite singer) singing from a CD player along with my father's whistling... then the paper cutter's gushing sound of shredding the flowers... my conversation with mother about the show preparation and gossips of her friends...

I'll update more as the installation process evolves next few days.
